East Africa Chai is made with fair-trade, premium tea leaves from the Aberdare mountain range in Kenya.
Through the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), we source whole, fully oxidized tea leaves from local small-scale farmers just like our grandmother. The KTDA is a private organization that brings together about 560,000 farmers who own about a half-acre of tea each. This means that each KTDA farmer is a corporate shareholder.
All of our estate and processing partners comply with the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP)standards. The ETP is an association dedicated to ensuring the global tea trade is environmentally and socially sustainable. You can learn more here.
To make East Africa Chai, we blend the tea leaves with organic spices from Egypt: cardamom, cloves, star anise, and cinnamon. We use bleach-free bags to contain the final blend.
Our tea has a strong, full-bodied flavor, made to taste exactly like the black spice tea commonly brewed in Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Kenya. Learn how to brew the perfect cup here.
